Cheaper tax rates

There are two options when looking at tax rates for new and used vans. 

• The change doesn’t affect any vehicle registered before 1 April 2017, but drivers can check the vehicle tax rates to make sure they know what they need to pay.

• For vehicles that have been registered after 1st April 2017, If a vehicle has a list price (the published price before any discounts) of more than £40,000, the rate of tax is based on CO2 for the first year.

  After the first year, the rate depends on the type of vehicle (petrol, diesel, alternative fuel or zero emissions) and an additional rate of £310 a year for the next 5 years.

Used vans will be cheaper for insurance than new vans. If you are unfortunate enough to be in an accident, your current insurer will only pay the current price value of the van. On newer models, the value for insurance payouts will be a lot higher than a used van.

You may be well aware a brand new van will depreciate in value almost instantly once those tyres have left the dealership (around 25%), these vans can rapidly depreciate in value within the first 12 months of being on the road. Especially in this climate, new vans are struggling to get out of the manufacturers as they're having to deal with many shipping issues, manufacturing issues, and sourcing brand new parts from suppliers.
